Positive 01:39
The carpet under your feet feels soft But it’s only hiding from view The cold, hard concrete you fall on When they pull the rug from under you. And you’re left without a leg to stand on Your naked arse exposed That’s when a so-called friend Will arrive to present you With the Emperor’s new clothes. They’ll tell you that “It’s really not THAT bad” They’ve been through it all before.... So get your hands off your cock! Pull up your socks! And don’t think like that any more! But positive thinking won’t stop you sinking If your boots are made of lead. Hanging on to hope won’t help you cope – I don’t care what Oprah said! The carpet under your feet feels soft But it’s only hiding from view The cold hard concrete you fall on When they pull the rug from under you... ©Greg Hancock 2020

Talk 02:23
I was taught while still at school Discussion was the simplest tool To understand and find the common ground. Just set things out with common sense and back it up with evidence To bring the opposition round You can talk all day - and you can talk all night Each side certain that they’re absolutely right. Talk with kindness, talk with force Talk the hind legs off a horse... Those heels dig deeper in, I’ve found. Engagement with the other side When everyone’s so polarised Will never shift another’s point of view. Even when your trump card’s played It fails to impress or persuade fake news replaces what is true You might as well just talk on your own You can talk and talk until the cows comes home Talk to clearly state your case Talk till you’re blue in the face The story resonates more than what’s true ©Greg Hancock 2020

Patience 02:06
Just a little bit of patience, And a pinch of salt Is what our poor blighted nation Requires of us all. Some calm, measured breathing A quick roll of the eyes - Disguise how you’re seething With world-weary sighs Stop torturing yourself – hoping for the truth That’s not the way things work these days... Look around you for the proof The people made their choice, you see. The system failed the test. The problem with democracy Is that it’s just a bit better than the rest... Time to pull the drawbridge up And re-assess your goals Time to nurture that cold, hard nugget Till the next chance at the polls.

Alert 02:36
Don’t go to sleep on Hush-a-bye Mountain Keep your eyes wide – this is no time for rest. Tomorrow there’s work, and the schools will re-open But you can’t use the bus. And you can’t get a test. Keep social distance while sharing a pizza Keep those two metres from your barber or boss. Keep your masks on, both pupil and teacher And if that’s not feasible.... don’t make a fuss! I see on the faces of those who don’t get it they’re just waiting for someone to sound the all-clear. So they can continue as if nothing has happened. And tell their kids stories of when the virus was here. I can see there’s a problem. I don’t have the answer. I’m just a cow, with no immunity in my herd. Information, competence and truth is all I’m after... So you bet your life...I’m keeping alert!

Safe 03:24
You don’t have to worry – you don’t have to worry at all You’re in safe hands. No need to feel anxious when the numbers refuse to fall... Be assured that someone has a plan. Sleep easy through the night – don’t let anything disturb your dreams They’re going to get this thing done! And if you ever begin to doubt, or think They don’t have your interests at heart And that someone’s pain is another one’s gain Nip that in the bud from the start! ‘Cos on the playing fields of Eton These posh old boys Learnt to filter out any other kind of voice With the Opposition beaten They’re holding all the toys. You got what you voted for, rejoice! You don’t have to worry – you don’t have to worry at all You’re in safe hands. And don’t ever begin to doubt, or think That they might not have a clue That they’re just blown by the wind Blind wandering Or that they know no more than you. ‘Cos on the playing fields of Eton These posh old boys Learnt to filter out inconvenient noise With the Opposition beaten They’re holding all the toys. I hope you got what you voted for, so rejoice!

about

During this very unusual year, having worked on and recorded a new album for release in 2021 (watch this space!), I really felt I wanted to put the guitar down for a while. I picked up my ukulele to satisfy strumming urges and these pieces emerged. They are in some ways very different from my usual output: although I make political observations occasionally in my other work, it is rarely "topical" partly because it dates so quickly, and also because I don't think my view is any more worthy of airing through music than any other, and quite often dislike it when other musicians do it! However.... 2020 was certainly an exceptional year, and I had an increasing number of bees in my bonnet over the way the year unfolded.....
