about

When the Prime Minister changed his slogan from STAY AT HOME to KEEP ALERT he was basically admitting defeat and washing his hands of any responsibility for the spread of the virus. People were now somehow expected to get on with their lives and avoid the virus by ...well... by looking out for it??

The first slogan was easy to understand. The second is virtually meaningless in the context. The Eat-out-to-help-out campaign was welcomed by those in the hospitality trade which was really in a desperate situation... but it marked the point where the damage to the economy was prioritised over the welfare of the people. It led people to conclude that if they were now "allowed" to do something, then it must be "safe" to do it. This led inexorably to the re-acceleration of infection rates we saw in the autumn.

I understand that there has to be a balancing act here and appreciate how impossible it is... but this was a moment that really cost the government a lot of pubic trust.

lyrics

Don’t go to sleep on Hush-a-bye Mountain
Keep your eyes wide – this is no time for rest.
Tomorrow there’s work, and the schools will re-open
But you can’t use the bus. And you can’t get a test.

Keep social distance while sharing a pizza
Keep those two metres from your barber or boss.
Keep your masks on, both pupil and teacher
And if that’s not feasible.... don’t make a fuss!

I see on the faces of those who don’t get it
they’re just waiting for someone to sound the all-clear.
So they can continue as if nothing has happened.
And tell their kids stories of when the virus was here.

I can see there’s a problem.
I don’t have the answer.
I’m just a cow, with no immunity in my herd.
Information, competence and truth is all I’m after...
So you bet your life...I’m keeping alert!
