about
One rainy afternoon, I was stuck house-sitting for a friend. The WIFI was not working and there was no mobile reception. There was a DVD player. And one DVD. A compilation of Laurel and Hardy movies.
These always seemed to be on TV when I was kid but I ddn't pay much attention to them then and so I was surprised to find just how funny they really were.
It struck me that there was an interesting theme in all of them.
In every plot, Oliver Hardy ends up being incandescent and speechless with frustration and rage at the well-meaning but idiotic and disastrous actions of Stan Laurel. But there is never any suggestion that their friendship is threatened. The line "Another nice mess you've got us into" has the stress on the fact that it might be one person't fault but they now have to deal with it together somehow.
Seemed pertinent.
lyrics
We all like to point the finger
at anyone who disagrees
But I don't like it - not one little bit
When the finger's pointed back at me
But you can't just stand in the middle
Sometimes things ARE black and white.
And compromise is a coward's fiddle
When the time comes to pick a side
And you take a stand
And you hold your ground
though you understand
That it's going to bring you down.
Because even if one side gets what it wants
Neither side can win.
Another nice mess you've got us into.
Another nice mess we're in.
