about

This song was written a few years ago and performed live a few times, but never really made itself clear in my head and didn't seem to fit well with other things I was writing for albums. That tricky combination of a depressing and desperate lyric with a lively upbeat tune...I knew it needed something a bit different and gradually started hearing a saxophone playing a lead riff on it. It took some time and experimentation to get it the way I wanted, but I hope you agree it was worth it... something quite different from my usual output!

lyrics

If you know a way out of this place - I'll take it!
I've been looking under unturned stones.
You've got that look on your face - no-one could fake it!
And I've been picking up dark undertones...

I used to think that the best about us
Ws the total lack of fuss.
But now there's no trust,
and I'd rather be alone.
I can't do anything right
So just to avoid a fight
I'm looking under unturned stones
Worried about dark undertones
Trying to read your mind is like trying to read CHICKEN BONES!

If you've got something on your mind.. just say it!
I've been listening first before opening doors.
If you've got a new move in the game... just play it!
I don't want to pussyfoot around any more.

I used to say that we could never be
Like those other couples that you see.
But you and me...
that's just the way we've grown.
It's cold and dark outside
But Hey! I need a place to hide.
I'm looking under unturned stones
Worried about dark undertones
Listening first before opening doors
Tippy-tippy-tippy toe across the floor.
Trying to read your mind
Trying to pick the right time
Trying to read your mind is like trying to read CHICKEN BONES!
