about

A difficult lesson to accept, but the last couple of years have really shown me that attempting to change people's minds through reasoned and logical discussion is virtually pointless. In fact it often has the effect of entrenching views, no matter how baseless or bizarre. Following conspiracy theories make people feel special and powerful, regardless of how crazy they seem to others... Any evidence to the contrary of their belief is met with "Well, exACTly...that's what they want you to believe!" This is all exacerbated when leaders are deceitful, shameless liars or incompetent. Once they are seen this way, it really doesn't matter what they say...people will listen to their gut feelings rather than to reason.

lyrics

I was taught while still at school
Discussion was the simplest tool
To understand and find the common ground.
Just set things out with common sense
and back it up with evidence
To bring the opposition round
You can talk all day - and you can talk all night
Each side certain that they’re absolutely right.
Talk with kindness, talk with force
Talk the hind legs off a horse...
Those heels dig deeper in, I’ve found.

Engagement with the other side
When everyone’s so polarised
Will never shift another’s point of view.
Even when your trump card’s played
It fails to impress or persuade
fake news replaces what is true
You might as well just talk on your own
You can talk and talk until the cows comes home
Talk to clearly state your case
Talk till you’re blue in the face
The story resonates more than what’s true
