about
This is a song I wrote several years ago in 2004 and apart from occasionally playing it at gigs, I never knew what to do with it. I decided the time had come to bring it out and finish it.
At that time, I was finally beginning to understand why all my relationships were so disastrous! I slowly realised that although I liked to be loved... I didn't like to be needed. I was more comfortable in a relationship with someone who is pretty self-contained and enjoys companionship, but doesn't want to do everything together, and would let me get on with my own thing in the way I like to do it!
So finding that person was the challenge...
lyrics
I won't bring you joy.
You're going to have to learn
to find all that kind of stuff for yourself.
I've nothing to deploy in my defence.
But in spite of everything
You still think we can win -
Though you've still only put one foot in the water.
You might make me smile.
And that might be more than enough
For a while.
But it won't take us the extra mile.
And if you really must
Keep talking about trust
You'll need the feet of a saint to get across the water.
And all our friends are gathering like black storm clouds.
But it only started mattering
When the noise from crowd
Got much too loud.
